Open Call for Proposals SculptureCenter, New York (Lá Fora… 36)

The In Practice program supports artists in creating new work for exhibition at SculptureCenter. We invite artists to submit proposals for projects and installations to be presented beginning in January of 2009. Artists selected for the In Practice program will receive a $250 honoraria and up to $1500 in production support.

SculptureCenter seeks proposals that offer new ways of considering sculpture or further the understanding of the discipline and how it can intersect with installation, architecture, performance, and other media.

For the 2008 open call, particular attention will be given to proposals that meet at least one of the following criteria:

– A site-specific artwork that furthers the discourse on sculpture and installation.

– Artwork in any media that re-examines or challenges perceptions or the understanding of space, systems, materials, and structures.

– Performance that responds to the particular environment of SculptureCenter.

All of the lower-level project spaces, the exterior courtyard, and the building exterior are available for these proposals. Other areas of the building and projects outside the confines of the building may also be considered. For performances, the main space can also be considered, depending on the exhibitions on view and the requirements of the performance.

Artists are encouraged to experiment with conventional display and exhibition formats. There are no geographic eligibility requirements, but the budget does not provide for travel, housing, or accommodation costs.

Applying artists are encouraged to visit SculptureCenter during open hours. Building images and floorplans may be viewed and downloaded on our website, as well as previous works presented at SculptureCenter.

A preliminary review of proposals will be conducted by SculptureCenter staff and advisors. A limited number of artists will be contacted for further information and/or studio visits.

Submitting artists will be notified by email by September 30, 2008. No calls please.

<!– Although the gallery will be closed to the public from November 19—January 7, applying artists are encouraged to visit SculptureCenter on December 2—3 between 11am and 6pm.
